I came to know Gary's first releases as my father worked at WEA music off Berwick Street, Soho.
I got hold of some white label pre-release and loved it (no, don't have it anymore. It walked off way back in the mist of time...).
I was into synthesiser and guitar stuff and Gary produced a winning combination.
My sister, Gemma, loved his music from the beginning too and quickly squirrelled my copies away to her room, never to be seen again. Just made me laugh though. She's always been lovely to me, apart from that.
As a sideline, I was also engineering and producing music for various small labels,
And by 1980 through 2002, released some bits n pieces in various genres, from Synthpop to Hard House, Drum n Bass, Industrial, Acoustic (and some Classical thrown in too).
I play various instruments and still teach guitar.
In 1998 my project, with Ben Reeve, Was The High Kings Of Tara (the most ridiculously pompous name we could come up with). As with other projects, the idea was to have one album only, before moving on. Ben said we should invite Gary to do a bit. I wasn't sure, but eventually put it to him. The spoken piece for 'Mars Is Heaven' followed. Gemma speaks at the start.
This is the only time our musical paths have touched.
I love to see Gary and Gemma whenever we have the opportunity. I even like their 3 girls (and I don't do kids!)
Shane O'Neill.
