REVIEWS

Manchester Academy
Tonight’s support band, Daggers, confidently walk onto the stage and their lead singer, Theo, introduces the band: We’re Daggers and we’re from Rusholme. Well, you can’t get more local than around the corner.

Their Killers meets early Depeche Mode sound harbours back to the hedonistic days of the 80’s and the live performance is that of an established stadium rock band, with Theo confidently strutting across the stage like an '80s rock god.

Standout tunes performed included Money and Private Life, with its heartfelt lyrics and sweet melodic sound and the sets closing tune, After Midnight - an electro-rock monster of epic proportions.

Noticed

Daggers certainly have the look and enough good songs to get them noticed, but they rely too much on the decade that brought you the Rubik’s Cube, fluorescent green socks and bad perms. Maybe, someone should send the DeLorean and transport these Rusholme ruffians back to the 1980s, where they would certainly be more at home.

Looking better than any other man of 50 wearing eyeliner, Gary Numan, the original cyborg punk revisited his 1979 Tubeway Army album Replicas with surprising virility. His proto-electro sound has aged well, thanks to some impressive playing by his talented backing band, which included Rob Holliday and talented record producer, Ade Fenton on keyboards and synthesizer.

Standout tunes included, the insanely catchy, Praying To The Aliens, crowd favourite We Are So Fragile – featuring a rocking guitar solo from Holliday and the Crazies, which sounded fantastic (Gary has apparently had problems with the song on previous dates).

Towards the end of the show, Gary cheekily points to his watch and asks the audience a question: “Is it 10.30 yet? I was born at 10.30pm, so I am now officially 50”. The band then perform a majestic version of Our Friends Electric, which stills sends a shiver down the spine

Afterwards, the band encourages the audience to sing Happy Birthday to Gary (not that they need much encouraging) and Gary’s pretty wife Gemma brings out a big cake for the blushing Birthday boy.

Gary then performed his mega hit Cars - an amazing song to hear live. It sadly doesn’t get an airing that often, well except on extra special occasions like tonight - and this gig was very special indeed.
