REVIEWS

March 8th 2009 Golden Plains Festival
Numan and his band set the standard early in the show. They entered the stage one by one under a cloud of red and purple light and proceeded to grind into the opener In A Dark Place. It was clear that this was not going to be a pop show.

Numan’s band clearly made a group appointment with the stylist – black hair, tattoos, black shirts and not a smile between them. These guys clearly take themselves seriously as a heavy, post-industrial rock band and have no desire to be a nostalgia act.

Two keyboardists provide heavily layered washes of sound that roll across throbbing rhythms created by both programming and bass and drummer. A rock guitar player is joined by Numan himself in providing some additional layers of sound. It’s obvious that this band would be more at home at the Soundwave Festival than an reunion tour with Numan’s contemporaries like the Human League or Ultravox.

More power to them. Their deliberately heavy handed approach actually drags some of Numan’s older songs like Cars and Films into a more contemporary sonic arena. You have to remember that Numan was a pioneer of the electronic sound and as such many of his songs employed some early and quite dinky sounds. Rather than replicate those sounds this band layers the sound on thick and dense to the benefit of the material.

Even the iconic Down In The Park becomes even for foreboding under the post-industrial sonic regime.

The majority of the set comes from the two more recent albums Jagged (In A Dark Place, Blind, Haunted, Jagged and Halo) and Pure (RIP,Pure, My Jesus, A Prayer For The Unborn and the show closer I Can’t Breath). These songs defiantly stick to a template that clearly respects Nine Inch Nails and their various offspring. The only criticism is that for someone not well versed in the intricacies of the individual songs there was a tendency for them to merge into a homogenous mass.

Of the older songs Metal (a song actually covered by NIN) was strong and the crowd pleasing Are Friends Electric predictably bought the house down.

And what a house it was! The big Forum crowd consisted of everything from Goths to bikers to 90’s nightclub promoters, to danceclubbers to indie rockers, metalheads and even some folks older than me.

There were a couple of older songs notable by their absence – Me I Disconnect From You and You Are In My Vision would have been welcome inclusions but the re-jigging of We Are So Fragile almost made up for them.

Overall you have to give Numan credit – he hasn’t so much re-invented himself but simply evolved and he manages to drag the audience kicking and screaming along with him. The best compliment I could give was that after a few songs I forgot that I was watching an artist I liked in the 80’s and just enjoyed the concert for what it was – a very good 2009 heavy rock and electronic music show.

In reality there are probably a few other bands treading the same path and doing it as well but none with the pedigree of Gary Numan. This was indeed a triumphant return to Australia after a 30 year absence
